Posters for musicians: Kevin Tkacz

I realized a few days ago that I’ve made a lot of posters for musicians. Some of the very first freelance work I did almost 10 years ago was for a Jazz night in Des Moines, IA. Here are some posters I designed for my friend, Kevin Tkacz, a Brooklyn-based bassist. He plays mostly improvisational jazz, but he is in no way “jazzy.”

I like having total creative freedom. Here’s what happens when that happens. These are in chronoloical order. Sort of.

Go check out his website too. I designed that a long time ago. And if you’re in Brooklyn, go see to the gig on the 17th. Barbes is a terrific bar and music venue. I once saw Roald Dahl there.

Signage design for Chicago Park District: Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier

Chicago Flower and Garden Show signage

Picture 1 of 25

Hi folks. I designed the signage for the Chicago Park District’s exhibit at the 2010 Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier. It was a coordinated effort by the Lincoln Park and Garfield Park Conservatories.

The theme of the show was “Great Performances” and Garfield Park asked me to translate that theme into signage. Honestly, I designed one concept; this was truly the only look that made sense. It’s styled after an Art Nouveau theater marquee. The colors are representations of the conservatories, referencing their history and construction: oxidized copper, black iron, and glass.

I was inspired by nature, old Chicago boulevards, lightposts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Chicago history and lore. Take a look.

Special report: The NEW News

The NEW News: Journalism We Want and Need is a special report of where our news sources have gone, are currently and will be. For anyone interested in anything at all related to journalism, and um… Things That Impact Your Life on a Daily Basis, check out this report. This report was published by Community Media Workshop, my long-term client and commissioned by The Chicago Community Trust. It's full of articles, survey results, commentary and a lengthy list of rated news sites. Trust me, it's worth the time to download and read.

Oh, and I designed the thing. It is an intimidating 36-pages of all sorts of data. I think I did a great job if I do say so myself. Get ready for a new landing page for this report that will combine the report articles with a Web 2.0 presence. It will be a lot more interactive and will be up soon. Right now, we have THIS to focus on.

Jo Di Zillo: Abstract Clouds CD

"The trees came out of the muck and the fish followed. Here we are. I have been playing music for a good portion of my life. I play drums, guitar, bass, organ, piano, harmonica and I sing. We want to take you higher."

This is from Joe's MySpace Page. And this is the second CD I've designed for Joe, and not just because my brother, Sam, plays drums in the band. Joe is truly a musician of all kinds. He plays just about everything, sings, writes his own stuff and besides that is one of my oldest friends.

Translating a time in a musician's career, the sound from an album and the musician's own picture of himself into compelling, descriptive album art is still one of the toughest art direction jobs to do. I hope I'm getting better at it.

Oh yeah, CD release party this Sunday (23rd) at The House Cafe in DeKalb, IL.
